Our Awards
The Mycotoxin Mould Test from Mosaic Labs is a urine-based screening that detects 11 clinically relevant mycotoxins associated with 40 mould species. Using advanced mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), this toxic mould test at home measures the actual mycotoxin burden being excreted by your body — a more direct indicator of exposure than environmental swabs or antibody-based blood tests. The test requires a single first-morning urine sample collected after a 12-hour fast, which increases the release of stored mycotoxins from adipose tissue for a more accurate reading. Results are returned from the Mosaic Laboratory in the USA in approximately three weeks, and the test is suitable from age two.
Mycotoxin exposure is increasingly recognised in functional medicine as a hidden driver behind a range of persistent and often unexplained symptoms. The test is commonly used to investigate chronic fatigue, brain fog, histamine-related issues, respiratory irritation and skin flare-ups that have not responded to standard treatment. Because mould toxins can affect the nervous system, immune function and hormonal balance, they have also been linked to insomnia, memory loss, depression, anxiety, hair loss, numbness in the extremities, migraine and muscle cramps. Many people are exposed through water-damaged buildings, damp housing or contaminated food without realising it, and conventional NHS testing does not screen for mycotoxins. A mycotoxin urine screening can provide the missing piece when routine investigations have come back clear, and guide a targeted detoxification protocol based on which specific toxins are present.

When we receive your results back from the laboratory in the USA (approx 3 weeks) we will email you your PDF report and, if you have chosen a support package, you will also receive our functional medicine advice to support your recovery. Our team have been working with mould illnesses for some years and are specialist in clearing any moulds found in your system.
If you are ordering from outside the UK we will ship via DHL or Fedex with return labels.
Q. How much urine is required for a urine mycotoxin test?
Specimen requirements are 10 mL of your first morning urine before food or drink is consumed. Fasting for 12 hours prior to taking your sample increases the excretion of mycotoxins from the adipose tissue, thereby giving us the most accurate reading.
Q. I go to the toilet several times in the night - will this make a difference?
The reason we ask for your first morning urine is that it is normally the most concentrated sample and has the highest PPM (parts per million). If you have bladder issues, we suggest picking another time in the day, but a minimum requirement for an accurate result is 3 hours between urination.
Q. Do I need to use a sauna or exercise before taking the sample to increase sweat production?
No. Mould illnesses can leave patients very unwell, and the high level of sensitivity in the testing procedure means this testing is suitable for all patients including those who are bed bound.
Q. Do I need to take any supplements or stop any before taking the mould toxicity test?
Avoid glutathione and binders such as charcoal or bentonite clay for 72 hours prior to taking your sample. The reason we use Mosaic Labs is for the high levels of sensitivity of their equipment. When you order testing through our website you will be asked to complete a form highlighting which supplements and medications you take so our functional medicine team know what your current protocol is and can advise or adjust as required.
Q. How will I know if my sample is good enough for an accurate reading?
Mosaic are the best labs in the world for this type of testing. They will immediately reject any samples not dense enough for testing and let us know. In the rare case this happens, we will send you another test kit.
Q. Will this urine mycotoxin test help my symptoms?
After many years successfully treating patients with mould illnesses, we are confident we can help. When ordering through us, we will ask you to complete a form highlighting your symptoms, as every patient is treated individually with a unique protocol.
Q. Is there an age limit for this testing?
No, although we recommend not starting testing on children under 2. If the patient is young or incontinent, then you may need to manually retrieve a sample via potty or bed pan.
Q. I can’t see any mould in my home but I am unwell and all testing through conventional medicine has come up blank!
This testing is not available under the NHS and sadly many chronically ill patients are left untreated when conventional medicine testing comes back clear. Mould can be present in your home without it being visible, so if you do test positive for mould we will recommend an expert to come and conduct detailed testing of your home.
Q. I can see mould in my home but I am the only person who is sick. Why are none of the rest of my family affected?
There is still not enough research into mould illness, however what we do know is that some patients do not detoxify moulds well. This can be through poor detoxification pathways or genetic variants. You can investigate detoxification pathways with genetic testing HERE.
Q. What mycotoxins does the Mosaic Labs MycoTOX test detect?
The test screens for 11 mycotoxins produced by 40 species of mould. Each mycotoxin is associated with specific mould genera and has distinct health implications:
- Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) — produced by Aspergillus species; primarily affects the liver and is classified as a carcinogen
- Ochratoxin A (OTA) — produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium species; primarily affects the kidneys and may contribute to kidney disease
- Zearalenone (ZEA) — produced by Fusarium species; mimics oestrogen and may disrupt hormonal and reproductive function
- Citrinin / Dihydrocitrinone (DHC) — produced by Penicillium and Aspergillus species; nephrotoxic (kidney-damaging) properties
- Gliotoxin (GTX) — associated with Aspergillus fumigatus; linked to immune suppression
- Mycophenolic Acid (MPA) — an immunosuppressive mycotoxin that may impair the body's ability to fight infection
- Chaetoglobosin A (CHA) — produced by Chaetomium species commonly found in water-damaged buildings
- Sterigmatocystin (STC) — an Aspergillus-derived toxin with potential carcinogenic properties
- Enniatin B (ENB) — produced by Fusarium species; found in cereal grains and associated with cell toxicity
- Roridin E (ROE) — a trichothecene mycotoxin produced by Stachybotrys and other moulds
- Verrucarin A (VRA) — another trichothecene commonly associated with water-damaged environments
Q. Who should consider a mycotoxin mould test?
This test is relevant for anyone who suspects mould may be contributing to ongoing health problems — whether or not mould is visible in their environment. You may want to consider testing if you experience any of the following:
- Chronic fatigue or debilitating exhaustion that does not improve with rest
- Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, confusion or memory loss
- Histamine-related symptoms such as flushing, itching or unexplained allergic reactions
- Respiratory irritation, recurrent sinusitis or chronic nasal congestion
- Skin rashes, flare-ups or sensitivity that have not responded to dermatological treatment
- Insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns
- Depression, anxiety or mood disturbances without an identified cause
- Unexplained hair loss
- Migraine, headaches, numbness in the extremities or muscle cramps
- Heightened sensitivity to smells, sounds or light
- A history of living or working in a water-damaged or damp building
- Chronic illness where conventional testing has not provided answers
The test is suitable from age two and is designed to be accessible for all patients, including those who are bed bound.
Q. How is the mycotoxin urine test different from an NHS mould allergy test?
An NHS mould allergy test typically measures your immune system's response to mould spores — it looks at IgE antibodies to determine whether you are allergic to mould, but it does not detect actual mycotoxins in your body. The Mosaic Labs MycoTOX test takes a fundamentally different approach: it uses LC-MS/MS mass spectrometry to measure the specific mycotoxin metabolites being excreted in your urine. This tells you whether toxic compounds from mould are present in your system, regardless of whether your immune system has mounted an allergic response. Many people who are chronically ill from mould exposure do not show a classic allergy on standard testing, which is why this urine-based mycotoxin screening can be the missing diagnostic step when NHS results come back clear.
Q. Can I order this mycotoxin test from outside the UK?
Yes. The test kit ships worldwide via DHL or FedEx with return labels included. For most countries you can select your location at checkout and the kit will be dispatched within 48 hours. If you are based in Australia, Bahrain, Bermuda, Canada, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates or the USA, please contact the clinic at info@mybodyfabulous.co.uk for a shipping quote before ordering. Your frozen urine sample is returned to Mosaic Laboratory in the USA using the prepaid label provided with the kit.
Q. What are the most common sources of mycotoxin exposure?
Mycotoxin exposure happens through three main routes: inhalation, skin contact and ingestion. The most commonly discussed source is water-damaged or damp buildings — inner wall materials, wallpaper, fibre glass insulation, ceiling tiles and gypsum board all provide surfaces for toxin-producing fungi to colonise. However, dietary exposure is also significant: commonly contaminated foods include grains, corn, cereals, peanuts and tree nuts, coffee, dried fruits, spices, milk and eggs. Mould does not need to be visible for mycotoxins to be present — they can persist in dust, soft furnishings and air systems long after visible growth has been remediated. If your test results confirm mycotoxin exposure, the clinic can recommend a specialist to conduct detailed environmental testing of your home.
Q. How does this test relate to other tests offered by the clinic?
The Mycotoxin Mould Test identifies which specific toxins are present in your body, but depending on your results and symptoms, complementary testing can build a fuller clinical picture:
- The Organic Acids Test (OAT), also from Mosaic Labs, can detect markers of mould colonisation in the gut (such as yeast overgrowth and Aspergillus-related metabolites) alongside broader metabolic, nutritional and neurotransmitter markers. Many practitioners order the OAT and MycoTOX together for this reason.
- The Hepatic Detox Profile assesses liver detoxification pathways — particularly relevant if mycotoxins such as Aflatoxin M1 or Ochratoxin A are detected, as both primarily affect the liver and kidneys.
- A Detoxification DNA test can reveal genetic variants that impair your body's ability to clear toxins, helping explain why you may be affected by mould while others in the same environment are not.
- The Glyphosate Test (also from Mosaic Labs) screens for a separate environmental toxin that can compound the effects of mycotoxin exposure.
Q. How should I prepare for the mycotoxin test to get the most accurate results?
Preparation is straightforward but important for accuracy. You should fast for 12 hours before collecting your sample — this encourages the release of mycotoxins stored in fat tissue, giving a more representative result. Collect 10 mL of your first morning urine before eating or drinking. You must stop taking glutathione supplements and binders such as activated charcoal or bentonite clay for at least 72 hours before collection, as these can bind to mycotoxins in the gut and reduce the amount excreted in urine. There is no need to exercise or use a sauna before sampling. Once collected, freeze the sample for a minimum of four hours before arranging DHL collection. Full step-by-step instructions are included with every test kit.
Q. Can mycotoxin exposure affect mental health and the nervous system?
Yes. Mycotoxins can cross the blood-brain barrier and directly affect neurological function. The symptoms linked to mould exposure include depression, anxiety, memory loss, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, confusion, insomnia, numbness in extremities and migraine. munosuppression and chronic inflammation — all of which can have downstream effects on mood, cognition and energy. If your results show elevated mycotoxins and you are experiencing mental health or neurological symptoms, our practitioners can recommend a targeted mould detoxification protocol alongside any complementary testing, such as the Organic Acids Test, which includes neurotransmitter metabolite markers.
Q. What happens after I receive my mycotoxin test results?
Your PDF results report will identify which of the 11 mycotoxins were detected and at what levels. If you have selected a support package, you will also receive either a personalised written report or a practitioner video call (or both) to discuss what the findings mean for you and outline a detoxification plan. The clinic's functional medicine team has worked with mould illness for several years and will tailor recommendations based on your specific mycotoxin profile, symptoms, medications and supplement history — all captured via the patient intake form at checkout. If mould is confirmed, the clinic can also recommend an expert to conduct detailed environmental testing of your home or workplace to identify and address the source of exposure.
